What do you mean with Penso che fossero andati troppo lungo? It's not clear, maybe I could help you to correct the sentence...
Also, because gli usually refers just to one person (him) it would be better just to say Hanno proibito fumare fuori nei luoghi pubblici in Italia?

@blueschaeffer, have fun with your kids. Yeah, hopefully "fumare" (this is the infinitive form of the verb!) is forbidden in the amusement park ;-)

Penso che fossero andati troppo lungo.
I think that they have gone too far.
* I meant "lontano" instead of "lungo".
* I'm treading in dangerous "past subjunctive" territory.
* There probably is a better idiom.
Per favore, mi dica cio' che avrei dovuto scritto.

Quindi, penso che quello sia accettabile cosi'. Non posso tradurre tra parentesi quadri.

Tjgolubi, now I understand what you meant! Maybe the phrase in italian more similar to the English would be: "Penso che siano andati troppo oltre" Oltre means beyond, and it's referring implicitly to "i limiti", the limits. We also can say "Penso che abbiano passato i limiti". So, as regards the subjunctive be careful, we don't need to use the past perfect subjunctive (fossero andati), but just the simple past subjunctive that leaves the auxiliary verb in the present subjunctive form (siano andati). In the comment you wrote "Per favore, mi dica cio' che avrei dovuto scritto", this sentence also needs a little correction. It should be "Per favore mi dica cio' che avrei dovuto scrivere". After a modal verb (dovere, potere, volere,...) we always leave the following verb in the infinitive form, even if it refers to something in the past. For example: Non avrei dovuto mangiare troppa cioccolata. Non sono andato al lavoro perchè dovevo andare dal dottore. As regards the wikipedia article, [l'introduzione di apposite sale fumo] means "the introduction of special smokers rooms". So the translation could be: In Italy smoking is prohibited in enclosed public places, effective January 10, 2005, with exception of special smokers rooms, where food might be served. Oh, I understand now. "sale" can mean "rooms" in addition to "salt" and "to climb". Thanks for all the help!

Yes in that case sale is the plural of la sala, that means "room". For example we also say sala da pranzo to say "dining room".
